The Theory of Four Roll Rolling Mill

Four roll rolling mill system is composed of two pcs of support rolls and two pcs working rolls. During mill, through pressing cylinder or mechanical pressing device, the pressing force will transmit to support roll bearing stand, support roll, working roll, and finally act on rolled piece. The work piece height will be reduced (become thinner), length extended (become longer), then to meet the expected specifications.

Due to the impact of pressing force, rollers will become bending, the workpiece edges will become thinner, rollers need grinding its convexity according to practical situation.

⚙️ Key Principle: The four-roll configuration uses backup rolls to minimize working roll deflection, ensuring uniform thickness and superior flatness across the full strip width.

    Product Introduction

🏭 The four-high reversing cold rolling mill is an important metal pressure processing equipment, widely used in metallurgy, mechanical manufacturing, non-ferrous metal processing and other industries.

From a technical perspective, the four-high reversing cold rolling mill consists of work rolls and backup rolls. The work rolls directly contact the rolled piece to perform rolling deformation, while the backup rolls support the work rolls to reduce their deflection and ensure the stability and accuracy of the rolling process. The reversible design enables the rolling mill to roll in both forward and reverse directions without frequent adjustments to the position of the rolled piece or the rolling mill, significantly improving production efficiency.

In terms of application scenarios, the four-high reversible cold rolling mill is mainly used for rolling various metal strips and plates, such as stainless steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, copper, and aluminum. It can meet the strict requirements of different industries for material thickness, width, surface quality, and mechanical properties. For example, in the automotive manufacturing industry, the plates rolled by the four-high reversible cold rolling mill are used for body panels and require high strength, good formability, and corrosion resistance; in the electronic and electrical industry, the strips rolled are used to manufacture various precision components and require high surface finish and dimensional accuracy.

In terms of industry standards, the design, manufacture, and acceptance of four-high reversing cold rolling mills follow strict standards and regulations. These standards cover multiple aspects such as the structure, performance, safety, and environmental protection of the rolling mill, ensuring its stable and reliable operation during operation and the safety of operators. For instance, parameters such as the rolling force, rolling speed, and roll diameter of the rolling mill are clearly specified to ensure the stability of the rolling process and the consistency of rolling quality.

In addition, the operation and maintenance of the four-high reversible cold rolling mill are also very important. Operators need to undergo professional training, be familiar with the structure, performance, and operating procedures of the rolling mill, and be able to correctly adjust the parameters of the rolling mill and handle various problems that occur during the rolling process. At the same time, regular maintenance and servicing are also key to ensuring the long-term stable operation of the rolling mill. This includes aspects such as roll replacement, lubrication system inspection, and electrical system maintenance.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q What is the main difference between a four-high rolling mill and a two-high rolling mill?
A four-high rolling mill uses two additional backup rolls to support the working rolls, which significantly reduces working roll deflection under high rolling forces. This results in more uniform strip thickness, better flatness control, and the ability to roll thinner gauges compared to a two-high rolling mill. The backup rolls also allow smaller-diameter working rolls to be used, which reduces rolling force requirements.
Q What materials can be processed by the four-high reversing cold rolling mill?
The four-high reversing cold rolling mill is capable of processing a wide range of metal strips and plates, including carbon steel, low alloy steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, copper, and aluminum. The specific models (650, 750, 850) listed in the technical parameters are designed for carbon steel and low alloy steel, but custom configurations are available for other materials based on user requirements.
Q What does "reversing" mean in the context of a four-high reversing cold rolling mill?
"Reversing" means the rolling mill is capable of rolling the metal strip in both the forward and reverse directions alternately. Instead of only rolling in one direction and requiring the coil to be repositioned for each pass, the reversing mill allows multiple rolling passes back and forth through the mill. This greatly improves production efficiency and allows precise control of the final thickness with fewer setup adjustments.
Q What is Hydraulic AGC and why is it important in this rolling mill?
Hydraulic AGC (Automatic Gauge Control) is the pressing method used in these rolling mills. It uses a hydraulic system to automatically and precisely control the gap between the working rolls in real time, compensating for variations in strip thickness, roll deflection, and thermal expansion. This ensures consistent and accurate final product thickness throughout the entire rolling process, which is critical for high-quality output in industries such as automotive and electronics manufacturing.
Q Can the technical parameters of the rolling mill be customized?
Yes. As noted in the technical parameter table, the models and parameters provided are for reference purposes only. The rolling mill can be fully designed and manufactured to meet specific customer requirements, including customized material types, strip widths, thickness ranges, rolling speeds, pressing forces, and control systems. Users are encouraged to contact the manufacturer directly to discuss their specific production needs and obtain a tailored solution.
Q What routine maintenance is required for the four-high reversing cold rolling mill?
Regular maintenance is essential to ensure long-term stable operation of the rolling mill. Key maintenance tasks include periodic replacement of work rolls and backup rolls when worn, inspection and replenishment of the lubrication system (including roll cooling and lubrication oil), electrical system checks (including Siemens PLC and DC speed regulator), hydraulic system inspection for the AGC pressing mechanism, and verification of the uncoiler and recoiler tension systems. Operators should be professionally trained and follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule.
