The Theory of Four Roll Rolling Mill

Four roll rolling mill system is composed of two pcs of support rolls and two pcs working rolls. During mill, through pressing cylinder or mechanical pressing device, the pressing force will transmit to support roll bearing stand, support roll, working roll, and finally act on rolled piece.

The work piece height will be reduced (become thinner), length extended (become longer), then to meet the expected specifications.

⚠️ Due to the impact of pressing force, rollers will become bending, the workpiece edges will become thinner. Rollers need grinding its convexity according to practical situation.
The Theory of Four Roll Rolling Mill

    Product Introduction

The four-high reversing cold rolling mill is an important metal pressure processing equipment, widely used in metallurgy, mechanical manufacturing, non-ferrous metal processing and other industries. It performs cold rolling on metal materials through the coordinated action of four rolls, achieving material thinning, surface quality improvement and mechanical property enhancement.

From a technical perspective, the four-high reversing cold rolling mill consists of work rolls and backup rolls. The work rolls directly contact the rolled piece to perform rolling deformation, while the backup rolls support the work rolls to reduce their deflection and ensure the stability and accuracy of the rolling process. The reversible design enables the rolling mill to roll in both forward and reverse directions without frequent adjustments to the position of the rolled piece or the rolling mill, significantly improving production efficiency.

In terms of industry standards, the design, manufacture, and acceptance of four-high reversing cold rolling mills follow strict standards and regulations. These standards cover multiple aspects such as the structure, performance, safety, and environmental protection of the rolling mill, ensuring its stable and reliable operation and the safety of operators. Parameters such as rolling force, rolling speed, and roll diameter are clearly specified to ensure stability of the rolling process and consistency of rolling quality.

🔧 Operation & Maintenance: Operators require professional training to be familiar with the structure, performance, and operating procedures. Regular maintenance — including roll replacement, lubrication system inspection, and electrical system servicing — is essential for long-term stable operation.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q What is the difference between a four-high reversing cold rolling mill and a standard rolling mill?
A four-high reversing cold rolling mill uses four rolls — two work rolls and two backup rolls — unlike a standard two-roll mill. The backup rolls minimize deflection of the work rolls, allowing for tighter thickness tolerances and improved surface quality. The reversing function allows rolling in both directions, greatly increasing production efficiency without repositioning the material.
Q What materials can be processed by the four-high reversing cold rolling mill?
The mill is capable of processing a wide range of metal materials, including carbon steel, low alloy steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, copper, and aluminum. It can produce strips and plates that meet strict requirements for thickness, width, surface quality, and mechanical properties across multiple industries.
Q What does the Hydraulic AGC pressing method mean and why is it important?
Hydraulic AGC (Automatic Gauge Control) is an advanced pressing system that automatically adjusts the rolling gap in real time to compensate for variations in strip thickness. This ensures consistent and precise final product thickness throughout the entire rolling process, which is critical for high-precision industrial applications such as automotive body panels and electronic components.
Q Can the mill parameters be customized according to specific production requirements?
Yes. All mill models and technical parameters listed in the specification table are provided as reference values. The design and manufacturing can be fully tailored to meet individual user requirements, including custom roll dimensions, rolling speed, pressing force, material width, and control system configurations.
Q Why do rollers require convexity grinding, and how often should it be done?
During rolling, significant pressing forces cause the rolls to bend slightly, which can result in the workpiece edges becoming thinner than the center. To compensate for this deflection effect, the rolls are precision-ground with a specific convex profile. The frequency of grinding depends on the production load, material type, and measured roll wear, and should be evaluated regularly as part of the routine maintenance schedule.
Q What kind of control system does the four-high reversing cold rolling mill use?
The mill is equipped with Siemens PLC for overall process control and Siemens 6RA70 DC speed regulators for precise motor speed control. The DC motor drive system provides stable and responsive speed control across the full rolling speed range, ensuring consistent rolling quality and safe operation. This combination of proven industrial control components delivers high reliability and ease of maintenance.
