The Theory of Four Roll Rolling Mill

Four roll rolling mill system is composed of two pcs of support rolls and two pcs working rolls. During mill, through pressing cylinder or mechanical pressing device, the pressing force will transmit to support roll bearing stand, support roll, working roll, and finally act on rolled piece.

The work piece height will be reduced (become thinner), length extended (become longer), then to meet the expected specifications.

⚙️ Due to the impact of pressing force, rollers will become bending, the workpiece edges will become thinner. Rollers need grinding its convexity according to practical situation.
The Theory of Four Roll Rolling Mill

    Product Introduction

The four-high reversing cold rolling mill is an important metal pressure processing equipment, widely used in metallurgy, mechanical manufacturing, non-ferrous metal processing and other industries. It performs cold rolling on metal materials through the coordinated action of four rolls, achieving material thinning, surface quality improvement and mechanical property enhancement.

🔩 Key Structure: The four-high reversing cold rolling mill consists of work rolls and backup rolls. Work rolls directly contact the rolled piece to perform rolling deformation, while backup rolls support the work rolls to reduce deflection and ensure stability and accuracy.

The reversible design enables the rolling mill to roll in both forward and reverse directions without frequent adjustments to the position of the rolled piece or the rolling mill, significantly improving production efficiency.

🏭 Application Scenarios: Mainly used for rolling various metal strips and plates, including stainless steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, copper, and aluminum — meeting strict requirements across different industries for thickness, width, surface quality, and mechanical properties.

In the automotive manufacturing industry, the plates rolled are used for body panels requiring high strength, good formability, and corrosion resistance. In the electronic and electrical industry, the strips are used to manufacture precision components requiring high surface finish and dimensional accuracy.

📋 Industry Standards: The design, manufacture, and acceptance of four-high reversing cold rolling mills follow strict standards covering structure, performance, safety, and environmental protection — ensuring stable, reliable operation and operator safety.

Operation and maintenance are also critical. Operators need professional training, familiarity with the rolling mill structure and operating procedures, and the ability to correctly adjust parameters and handle issues during rolling. Regular maintenance — including roll replacement, lubrication system inspection, and electrical system maintenance — is key to long-term stable operation.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q What is a four-high reversing cold rolling mill and how does it work?
A four-high reversing cold rolling mill is a metal processing machine consisting of two work rolls and two backup rolls. The work rolls directly contact and deform the metal strip, while the backup rolls prevent the work rolls from deflecting under high pressure. The "reversing" feature allows rolling in both forward and reverse directions, reducing the need to reposition the material and improving production efficiency.
Q What materials can be processed by the four-high reversing cold rolling mill?
The four-high reversing cold rolling mill is designed to process a wide range of metal strips and plates, including carbon steel, low alloy steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, copper, and aluminum. It can handle material thicknesses typically ranging from 2.0 mm to 3.5 mm input and produce finished thicknesses as thin as 0.15 mm, depending on the model.
Q What are the available models and their key differences?
Three standard models are available: 650, 750, and 850. The numbers generally reflect the nominal roll barrel length (mm). As the model number increases, the rolling capacity increases — including wider material widths, higher pressing forces (5000 KN up to 7500 KN), and faster rolling speeds (360 m/min up to 540 m/min). Custom configurations are also available upon request.
Q What industries commonly use the four-high reversing cold rolling mill?
This equipment is widely used across multiple industries, including: automotive manufacturing (body panels requiring high strength and formability), electronics and electrical (precision components needing tight dimensional tolerances and fine surface finish), metallurgy, mechanical manufacturing, and non-ferrous metal processing. Any industry requiring high-quality thin metal strips can benefit from this machine.
Q What control systems are used in the four-high reversing cold rolling mill?
The rolling mills are equipped with advanced control systems, including Siemens 6RA70 DC speed regulators and Siemens PLC electric control systems. The pressing method uses Hydraulic AGC (Automatic Gauge Control), ensuring precise thickness control and consistent rolling quality across all three models.
Q Can the four-high reversing cold rolling mill be customized to specific requirements?
Yes. The standard models and parameters listed in the technical table are provided as reference specifications. The design and manufacturing of the rolling mill can be fully tailor-made according to the customer's specific requirements, including custom roll dimensions, rolling force, speed, material type, and automation level.
