The Theory of Four Roll Rolling Mill

The four roll rolling mill system is composed of two support rolls and two working rolls, working together to reduce workpiece thickness and extend its length.

Four roll rolling mill system is composed of two pcs of support rolls and two pcs working rolls. During mill, through pressing cylinder or mechanical pressing device, the pressing force will transmit to support roll bearing stand, support roll, working roll, and finally act on rolled piece. The work piece height will be reduced (become thinner), length extended (become longer), then to meet the expected specifications.

Due to the impact of pressing force, rollers will become bending, the workpiece edges will become thinner, rollers need grinding its convexity according to practical situation.

The Theory of Four Roll Rolling Mill

    Product Introduction

The four-high reversing cold rolling mill is widely used in metallurgy, mechanical manufacturing, and non-ferrous metal processing, enabling precise material thinning, surface quality improvement, and mechanical property enhancement.

The four-high reversing cold rolling mill is an important metal pressure processing equipment, widely used in metallurgy, mechanical manufacturing, non-ferrous metal processing and other industries. It performs cold rolling on metal materials through the coordinated action of four rolls, achieving material thinning, surface quality improvement and mechanical property enhancement.

From a technical perspective, the four-high reversing cold rolling mill consists of work rolls and backup rolls. The work rolls directly contact the rolled piece to perform rolling deformation, while the backup rolls support the work rolls to reduce their deflection and ensure the stability and accuracy of the rolling process. The reversible design enables the rolling mill to roll in both forward and reverse directions without frequent adjustments to the position of the rolled piece or the rolling mill, significantly improving production efficiency.

In terms of application scenarios, the four-high reversible cold rolling mill is mainly used for rolling various metal strips and plates, such as stainless steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, copper, and aluminum. It can meet the strict requirements of different industries for material thickness, width, surface quality, and mechanical properties. For example, in the automotive manufacturing industry, the plates rolled by the four-high reversible cold rolling mill are used for body panels and require high strength, good formability, and corrosion resistance; in the electronic and electrical industry, the strips rolled are used to manufacture various precision components and require high surface finish and dimensional accuracy.

In terms of industry standards, the design, manufacture, and acceptance of four-high reversing cold rolling mills follow strict standards and regulations. These standards cover multiple aspects such as the structure, performance, safety, and environmental protection of the rolling mill, ensuring its stable and reliable operation during operation and the safety of operators. For instance, parameters such as the rolling force, rolling speed, and roll diameter of the rolling mill are clearly specified to ensure the stability of the rolling process and the consistency of rolling quality.

In addition, the operation and maintenance of the four-high reversible cold rolling mill are also very important. Operators need to undergo professional training, be familiar with the structure, performance, and operating procedures of the rolling mill, and be able to correctly adjust the parameters of the rolling mill and handle various problems that occur during the rolling process. At the same time, regular maintenance and servicing are also key to ensuring the long-term stable operation of the rolling mill. This includes aspects such as roll replacement, lubrication system inspection, and electrical system maintenance.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1 What is the difference between a four-high rolling mill and a two-high rolling mill?
A four-high rolling mill uses two work rolls and two backup rolls. The backup rolls support the work rolls to significantly reduce deflection and bending, resulting in better thickness uniformity and surface quality compared to a two-high rolling mill. This makes it more suitable for rolling thin, wide, or high-strength materials.
Q2 What materials can be processed by the four-high reversing cold rolling mill?
The four-high reversing cold rolling mill is capable of processing a wide range of metal strips and plates, including carbon steel, low alloy steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, copper, and aluminum. The specific material compatibility depends on the mill model and configured rolling force.
Q3 What does "reversing" mean in a four-high reversing cold rolling mill?
"Reversing" means the rolling mill can operate in both forward and reverse directions. This allows the material to pass back and forth through the mill multiple times without repositioning, enabling the mill to achieve the target thickness in fewer setups and significantly improving production efficiency.
Q4 What is Hydraulic AGC and why is it important?
Hydraulic AGC (Automatic Gauge Control) is an automatic thickness control system that uses hydraulic cylinders and real-time feedback sensors to precisely control the rolling force and roll gap. It ensures consistent product thickness throughout the rolling process, minimizing thickness deviation and improving overall product quality.
Q5 Why do the rolls need to have their convexity ground?
During rolling, the high pressing force causes the rolls to deflect (bend) slightly. This deflection results in the edges of the workpiece becoming thinner than the center. To compensate for this effect, the rolls are precision-ground with a specific convexity (crown) profile so that the finished strip has uniform thickness across its full width.
Q6 Can the four-high reversing cold rolling mill be customized for specific production requirements?
Yes. The mill models and parameters listed in the technical table are standard reference configurations. The design and manufacturing can be fully customized according to the customer's specific requirements, including material type, strip width, target thickness, rolling speed, pressing force, and control system preferences.
